Surfing with Helen Bates - Clay Urls Late June 02 Group 1 - Nov. 9 '02

I try to do a few of the most recent, then a few of the earlier
surfing finds on alternate posts.

These I am sending this evening were first visited by me near the
end of June 2002 and saved in my bookmarks for further perusing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery (Scripps College)
http://web-kiosk.scrippscollege.edu/
This is a sophisticated web site that has been recently enhanced.
Clicking on "Index Tree", Portfolio "Index", oe "Major Collections"
are equally productive.
For anyone interested in the history of ceramics from ancient times to the
end of the 20th. Century, the areas to look at would include these categories:
Ancient Art (Middle Eastern and Western); Native American and Mexican Art;
Ceramics; African Art; Decorative Arts; and Asian Art.
The Ceramics category, one of the largest of the gallery's permanent holdings,
(two thirds of this is the Fred Marer Collection) is subdivided into:
Bowls; Plates and Platters; Containers; Sculptural;.Cups; Tiles and Plaques;
Dishes; Vases; Pitchers and Teapots; and Urns.
The quality of the large images is very high.
Where possible, "artist info" is given, and even a photo of the artist in
some cases (such as Michael Cardew.)

Paul Soldner (Aspen, Colorado and Claremont, California, USA)
http://www.paulsoldner.com
Click on "Ceramics" for recent and current work shown by Paul, done in unglazed
Raku clay, high fired in a wood-burning kiln with natural ash glaze deposits.
Click on "Printmaking" for not only his monoprints but for a left side menu of
his various clay works;
The "Pedestal Pieces" can be viewed from both sides by clicking on them or by
passing the mouse pointer over them (slight delay.)
There is also a link to the numerous pieces by Soldner (who taught for over 30
years at Scripps College in California), held in the Fred Marer Collection
(see above.)
The Soldner Equipment Company (clay mixers):
http://soldnerequipment.com
(Now owned by Conrad Snider (Muddy Elbow Manufacturing, Newton, KS)
http://www.visit-snider.com/studio
Conrad makes immense wheel-thrown and deeply carved and altered vase forms
taller than he is.

Concordia College Ceramics Studio (Moorhead, Minnesota, USA)
http://www.cord.edu/dept/art/ceramics.html
This is another excellent web site from an well-equipped ceramics department.
If you take a thorough look around this site as well as at the Soldner pieces
at the Scripps site above, you will find good examples of the Raku "Halo"
effect (discovered, I believe, by Soldner.)

Young Audiences of Colorado (Denver, Colorado, USA)
http://www.youngaudiencescolorado.org
The Artists in Residence Program
Provides a roster of artists available for artist residencies in Colorado's schools.
Clayarter Marie Gibbons has been an Artist in Residence in this program.
Click on "Residency Artists";
Scroll down; click on: "Marie E.v.B. Gibbons - Sculpture."

Linda Lighton (Kansas City, Missouri, USA)
http://www.lindalighton.com/
Ceramic sculptor whose present focus is large format flower pod and bulb forms.
China paint and lustres are used in the decoration of these fascinating pieces.
The artist's previous work has also included sculptures with social or
philosophical themes as well as outdoor and indoor figural pieces.
One wonders if these orchid forms could be seen as female parts, in spite of the
Latin name?

Nathaniel Bustion (USA)
http://www.nathanielbustion.com
Sculptor and printmaker.
Works in earthenware and stoneware clays, resin, and bronze.
The 3-d ceramic pieces are generally complex in form and strongly colourist in effect.
