Hallo,
I consided myself reasonably well read up on ceramics and I thought Marta
Ortiz was a woman as well.
Maybe the publicity machine needs a bit of fine tuning.

Makes me wonder if there was perhaps a common
source for this particular misspelling 'over
there', as I've never encountered it 'over here'.

It is not Marta but Mata. The village originally named Pearson after Dr.
Pearson the engineer in change of building the railroad back in the early
1900's. After the Mexican Revolution they renamed many of their villages
after Mexican war hero's. Pearson was renamed after Juan Mata Ortiz a famous
Indian Fighter. Juan was second in command of the Mexican force who fought
and killed the Apache Chief Victorio at the battle of Tres Castillos in
Mexico.

I guess maybe there is an error in a book "over here" somewhere?
Therefore presumably the author or publisher also got confused?
