Last week we contacted Thermal Ceramics for information on the
hazards of insulating firebrick dust.
They told us that low-temperature firebricks (2300 deg. F) contain
as much as 5% crystalline silica, but most likely much less.
The reason they can only estimate the amount of silica in
firebricks is that the latest analysis technique, X-ray
diffraction, cannot distinguish anorthite (glass) from
cristobalite.
According to what we were told, OSHA no longer enforces total dust
standard on crystalline silica containing mineral dust.
Basically they told us to use simple precautions concerning the
dust.
I'm contributing this information because firebrick dust has been
discussed on Clayart lately. If anyone on the list has reason to
disagree with this information, I hope you let us know.
With best wishes,
