Caroline
You asked about Satin matte glazes.
Try the high Calcium or high Magnesium mattes often listed as
Oatmeal in the source books. They have a smooth surface but a
lovely limpid milky appearance. If they are cooled rapidly from top
temperature they will be clear glossy glazes. The milkiness
comes from a slow micro-crystallisation which needs time.
Typically a couple of hours above 800 degrees Celsius.
You can add oxides for colour and they have a unique colour
response. Cobalt tending towards mauve/purple. Beware
interaction between oxides in the glaze and those in the coloured
body - this can lead to muddy browns and blacks.
Have fun!
