CLAYART Digest - 9 Nov 2002 to 10 Nov 2002 (#2002-311)Iron precipitate =
is chemically produce RIO. It is precipitated through a chemical =
reaction. The result is a highly pure and fine grained RIO
Other RIO is naturally occuring high grade "ore". It will have some =
impurities. My supplier carries two grades of RIO:
one is for "glaze" and is high purity at $24.00 for 10 lbs and the =
other they call "body" RIO for about $10.00 per 10 lbs (you can get any =
quantity)
The high purity one is a much brighter red and may be "precipitated" =
although they make no mention of it. They call the two grades "glaze" =
and "body" versions, but of course you could use either one for glaze or =
clay body. The less expensive one is also somewhat coarser. I used =
some in a celedon glaze and it made speckles (which I actually liked =
quite well) whereas the high purity one did not create any speckles in =
the same celedon recipe. I tried them both in a dark iron red glaze and =
I couldn't tell the difference.
The supplier of these is Georgies Ceramics in Portland Oregon. There =
website (www.georgies.com) does not list all the stuff in there catalog, =
but you can get their phone number, etc. They have good products at =
decent prices and I have always had great customer service. They have a =
great catalog.
