art/science room?

updated sun 17 nov 02

The elementary/middle school where I teach has purchased a former warehouse
& will be remodeling it to be our new school. The plans at present call
for combining art and science in the same classroom (the classes will be
held at different times). I'm not very crazy about this idea and am
looking for some help in persuading the Principal and PTO that we should
have separate rooms. Cost/space are the reasons for the combination.

Do any of you teach in a similar situation? What problems/benefits have
you experienced?

Thanks so much in advance for any replies,

Hi Valice,
The first thing that comes to mind is clay dust on
scientific instruments or on counters & floors if the
science equipment is stored. This may include plaster
dust, paper mache, enameling, etc. Even if everything
is vented & you work hard to keep it clean there will
still be some left.

The second IMHO is a healthy Art room is slightly
messy. A healthy Science room is as clean as possible
to keep experiments & equipment accurate & safe.

Kids are going to drop and spill everything from
poster paint to glazes. Of course teachers try to keep
it down to a minimum and pick up the glaring messes.
Still, the greatest clean up comes after the kids
leave. If a science class is coming in directly after
your art class the students may have to spend too much
of their art time on clean-up. And you will probably
have an annoyed co-worker who teaches science.

-Or maybe I'm just way too comfortable with kid art
messes ;-)

Lots more reasons too I'm sure,
Cheers,
Jeanne W.
