Many years ago I had to etch some glass using hydrofloric acid. I was
wondering if, with glazes high in silica, a similar effect would result?

DO NOT USE THIS STUFF EVER, FOR ANYTHING!!!
It is among the most dangerous of acids.
You can etch glass using other materials.
The acid pastes sold in craft shops are
among the easiest and safest.
