Attended the opening of the Ceramica y Cultura exhibition Sunday afternoon at the Museum of International Folk Art - definitely a Not Miss if you are in the Santa Fe area. This exhibition of Spanish and Mexican Mayólica from US as well as Hispanic collections abroad, reflects Spain's early encounter with the Islamic world & its later political & economic ties w/ No Europe & the Mediterranean world. Decorative art on the pieces show scenes from Spaish daily life. And as one gets further into the history of this artform, one can see how Spain brought its culture to its colonies in the New World, and how NW elements reverted back to Spain & eventually Europe (i.e. chocolate). There was a wonderful slide show by Antonia Casanovas, Chief
Curator, Museu de Cerámica, Barcelona, Spain entitled Ceramics & Painting: Documents of Daily Life. There were also several demonstrators present - Juan Antonio Frolian Oviedo (Talavera de la Reina, Spain) who demonstrated painting techniques, and Gorky Gonzalez Sr. (Guanajuato, Mexico) who demonstrated wheel-throwing techniques. There will be a catalogue published in Spring, 2003 through the UNM Press; there is also a book Majolica Ole - Spanish and Mexican Decorative Traditions, by Florence Lister for sale thru the Museum bookstore. And the fundraising Gala Saturday nite was alot of fun, too - lots of food and drink (one local restaurant made paella in situ, in a 4' round pan), tango lessons in the auditorium, silent auctions for related items and the actress Ali MacGraw telling fortunes.
