A tiny PS to Snail's crystal clear post.
The bottom of a cup or similar generally is thicker than the walls. That
means that the gases etc from the clay need more time to get out. That
means in essence that the edges and sides (thinner) of a pot actually are
fired properly before the base and bottom. Which is as true, i expect in
bisque as in glaze firing. This contributes to glaze defects towards the
bottom of a pot, or in the base.
