I have gone through an alphabetical list of how to attach handles and
have tried about fifteen different ways. What I was wondering
is "What makes the strongest bond between handle and clay using both
low-iron and mid-iron bearing mid-fire stoneware?
If someone is a ceramisist or chemist or whatever that knows the
strongest way to obnd clay to clay I would really appreciate it!
Methods tried so far:
1. Wet (newly thrown clay) attached to wet (newly trimmed clay)
pulled handle, a)no surface treatment b)scored handle c)scored mug d)
both scored
2. Wet (newly thrown clay) attached to wet (newly extruded) and
shaped handle, a)no surface treatment b)scored handle c)scored mug d)
both scored
3. One minute warm under a flame spreader (propane torch) over
entire piece after throwing, attached to wet (newly trimmed clay)
pulled handle, a)no surface treatment b)scored handle c)scored mug d)
both scored
4. One minute warm under a flame spreader (propane torch) over
entire piece after throwing, attached to wet (newly extruded) and
shaped handle, a)no surface treatment b)scored handle c)scored mug d)
both scored
5. One minute warm under a flame spreader (propane torch) over
entire piece after throwing, attached to one hour dried (trimmed
clay) pulled handle, a)no surface treatment b)scored handle c)scored
mug d)both scored
6. One minute warm under a flame spreader (propane torch) over
entire piece after throwing, attached to one hour dried (extruded)
and shaped handle, a)no surface treatment b)scored handle c)scored
mug d)both scored
7. Numbers #1 and #2 tried with 25% white vinegar and water solution
All of these methods work to one degree or another but I wonder which
creates the strongest bond?
