Hello-
I have a question regarding ball clays. Is there a
significant difference in plasticity between the
various lines? I have dug and processed a few pounds
of local clay, and with the addition of about 25% OM4,
it throws fairly well. However, it could use a bit
more plasticity, hence my question. If there's no
difference, I'll add a bit more OM4 since I have it on
hand.
Is there any benefit in adding other ball clays? Or,
is there another additive that may be useful? How does
ball clay affect the maturation temperature? I fire my
work to ^6 in an electric kiln.
I have a few test bars drying now to test the wet to
bone dry shrinkage. Also, I have a small bowl drying
as another test piece. In the next few weeks I will be
firing the test pieces to measure the clay's
absorbtion and to locate it's maturation point.
