Kiln Sitter Cone Loss Problem:
Intermittently, one of our three studio kilns shuts off prematurely. The
unexpected shutdown comes about when the cone falls off the kiln sitter
support prongs. This appears to be due to vibration from the vent fan in
the base of the unit.
Although the kilns are fired under electronic controls for ramps and soaks,
shutoff is under control of a conventional Dawson kiln sitter. Some members
of the studio have been firing without turning the vents on -- at some
hazard to studio occupants – to avoid the unexpected shutdowns.
The kiln with the problem is a Skutt, as is one of the other two kilns.
All three have base mounted vent units. All three kilns have been serviced
within the last 6 months, and new fan motors installed in the two Skutts.
There is no readily perceptible difference in the vibration levels of these
two kilns.
We are anxious to learn from the experience of others, and hope that may
have found a means of suppressing or isolating the vibration

Could you file (or grind) a flat notch in the cone
supports? Just enough to leave a small 'prong' or
'lip' at the end, to help keep the cone from sliding
off? It won't help with lateral slippage, and you'd
have to recalibrate the sitter slightly, but maybe
it would help a little.
