You might try having the students get their slabs ready the week before,
which will give the slabs more time to stiffen on the mold.

I roll out slabs, lay plastic,then another board on top,flip. Take the top
board off & lay down more plastic. To save for longer periods of time, I
lay the extra board back on top & put the whole "sandwich" inside a large
garbage bag. You can stack a lot of "sandwiches" in one bag. If there
might be a drying problem due to the weather or too much heat in the room,
I spray the outside of the first plastic layer with water and add another
piece of plastic.

I've kept slabs workable for a long time using this method.
