Something tells me that my old computer is failing rather
rapidly. It's making odd noises, slowing down, warping....
if I suddenly disappear from cyberspace with unanswered
mail - I'll be back when the computer is replaced. I rather
think it is more or less beyond repair.
At the moment it still boots up, though. Ah, me. If it ain't
one thing it's another.

Sounds like maybe a virus. Get thee a McAfee.
We had a virus early on (about 12 years ago) that infected Macs at work.
One of our cyberphobic engineers was getting more and more peculiar by the
day. He would suddenly dart out of his cubicle walk back and forth in the
aisle staring at his Mac. I came in early one morning and walked by his
cubicle when all else was quiet and heard, "I thought you knew how to use
this thing?" I peeked in and he was there, white faced, staring at his Mac.
This particular virus left unchecked eventually slowed the machine to almost
a standstill and gave out nasty comments to the operator. We cleaned his
computer and he returned to sanity.
