"Turns out many of those who were "making it" had spouses who were
making it better."
If that isn't a classic line I don't know what is!

When I first started as a potter, in my teens, I worked with a few potters
and worked various craft fairs. At that time I presumed that the craftspeople
I met at those shows were all self supporting artists/clay people. When I
finally started renting my own studio and endeavored to create my own body of
work I found it rather difficult, so, rather than rest on my presumptions, I
asked all these folks "how do you do it?" By and large only THEN did I found
out almost all had working spouses and/or teaching jobs.

Taking a "day job" isn't the worst thing in the world. (Having a successful
spouse wouldn't be bad either!)

If you can't pay your bills and you just can't make another toothbrush holder
do me a favor and GET A JOB! Don't punish yourself because you want/need to
call yourself a "potter" and think that taking a day job is somehow an act of
treason. I'd much rather see a show of pots by "dabblers" than a show of
"working" potters. Its not the "job" that makes you a potter, ITS THE POT!

(This posting is not intended to offend anyone. It is only intended for those
who are struggling with the "daily grind".)

Kudos, Jeff. When the passion is gone, it's time to move on. When
making toothbrush holders (or whatever your most hated production
piece, or production in general) wears you down, guess what - potting
has become the daily grind!

Well that's the reality of it for me . My wife was bringing in
more in after
tax income than I was making wholesale. Now she has stopped work
its up to
me to do the right thing by her ,until I can draw my ex-service
pension. Then
we can be hobby potters till we pass on to the other side :).
