So Janet,
let me see if I have this straight. We make a product that nobody
needs. That will usually be out performed by a modern subsitute. Most
modern homes do not have any. Made by labor intensive, archaic,
polluting methods. Most likely of doubtful safety by todays standards.
Without proper business capitalization, no business plan, or contracted
buyers. A physically demanding, potentially dangerous work
environment. Have I forgotten anything?
Oh yeah, better own the property, if I had a rental, I probably wouldn't
rent it to pyromaniacs.
Pottery is a wonderful seduction, but unless your stuff is so good
people are knocking down your door, it seems to me asking it to pull the
load is a mistake. Why risk your welfare on such a doubtful venture?
Start slow, advance consistently.

IF you take out all the extra twists and curleques YOU added and leave the
bare bones of what I actually said, then, yes Don, the second and fourth
sentences in your post would be about right.
I wrote a factual "how it is for most working potters in our society today"
post, not a "how it should be" or "how we want it to be" or any "how to
follow your dream" message. Nor did I write what some were wanting to hear.
We all have to make our own decisions and I would never presume to advise
one way or the other.
But the blunt truth is painful and usually makes one feel uncomfortable
and/or defensive. We can ignore it if we want to, but it usually has a way
of coming back to haunt us. It makes gloomy reading, but I am a realist and
personally prefer walking into a situation with eyes wide open, not tight
shut singing "Here I come! Here I come! Here I come". Whistling in the dark
works well when we are children, but is not too helpful later in life.
Cautionary tales and words are as genuine, well-intentioned and heartfelt
as all the enthusiastic "go for it" type posts... IMO a BALANCE is so
important when weighing up life's great and small decisions and I felt it
absolutely necessary to put a little subjective realism on the scales...
My star is Libra and it always behoves me to act along these lines. Just
don't shoot the messenger, OK?
Sincerely
Janet Kaiser - who was receiving really weird porn and weight-loss Spam as
well as all those odd offers from China, but is now suddenly inundated by
amusing edible offers... "40lb lobsters free" ... "Get 12 free Burgers +
1/2 Price Omaha Steaks!"... Do they have my profile? Will Spam become
meaningful to individual recipients one day?
