Linda Blossom was here in September for a workshop wherein she shared =
her paperclay recipe with the group. Participants then decided they'd =
like to try her recipe, so I took orders for 2050lbs of the stuff which =
was then custom blended by Axner and set down in the middle of my studio =
last Friday.
Somebody screwed up, and they shipped me 3050lbs of the stuff, which =
leaves me something on the order of 20 boxes extra. Axner is not =
charging me for the error, but I agreed to post the availability of said =
clay here, and send them the $ if I sell it. (What the hell; it's =
taking up room in my studio.)
Cost is $33.50/box (it's expensive because it has 30%paper by volume) =
plus shipping to you from Greensboro, NC. If you're nearby, you can =
come get it. (call 336-644-2768 for pick up time) If you live in the =
US29 corridor between Greensboro, NC and Hood College in Frederick, MD, =
I will BRING IT TO YOU the week of 1/9/03, (assuming you don't want all =
1000lbs.)
This claybody will fire to ^6 according to Linda. It DOES have a very =
high paper content, and fires out a warm buff in oxidation. Velly =
intellesting stuff. You canNOT throw it, but it will be interesting for =
handbuilding tile and slab work. Email me offlist for more info if =
needed lpskeen@living-tree.net

I wash all my bisqueware, no matter the clay body - paper, porcelain,
stoneware. It takes a couple minutes extra, but my glazes don't
crawl. And both paperclay and porcelain have a dusty surface
after bisque.

A little adjustment on the temperature range - I have taken this clay to a
very full cone 8. It didn't slump so I don't know it's true upper range.

Ok, I know this has been covered to some extent before, but since this has a
higher paper content, I'm wondering how it will do in an electric kiln? The
paperclay I had awhile back (not this one) has about 10% paper, and it had a
dusty feeling when it came out of the bisque. Do you sponge or wash off
your tiles after bisquing?

Hello Lisa
There are two reasons for making my own paperclay:
1) I cannot buy it here.
2) When I make it myself Iu know what there is.
I belive Axner charge you more than expected for the labor work of making it.
The only disadvantage with my self prepared clay , is the need to keep it in the
refrigerator when humid, however you can make and keep defloculated slurry in
closed plastic cans. In my hot climate it keeps more then a month in the summer the
microbes do not like sodium silicate!. You can add the paper when you need you need
To avoid problems I use only stoneware bodies. I add 30% humid paperclay pulp to
defloculated slurry.

I didn't have any problem when I fired in the electric kiln. My elements
were coated with itc and I never lost a minute on the firing schedule due to
the paper clay. The dust I cannot answer to as I never bisque. Paperclay
apparently has no problems being single fired as that is my only method.
