kiln floor brick cracking

updated wed 25 dec 02

The soft brick in the floor of my electric (Cress) kiln has a crack all the
way across it, somewhat larger than hairline. This involves more than one
brick. I have had this kiln less than a year, and done very few firings in
it, none to greater than cone 6. The kiln is in an outdoor, enclosed wood
shed and I fire with the door open. The rest of the time, the shed is
closed, with the lid down on the kiln.

My main question is: Does this cracking in the floor affect the
function/performance of the kiln? Is there a safety issue? I realize I will
need to contact the dealer from whom I bought it, but in the meantime,
since it's the weekend and the holidays are coming up, I thought I would
ask all you experts for some of your accumulated wisdom on the matter.

Thanks much......

Barbara asked about the cracked floor of her newer Cress electric kiln.
Barbara - We have 5 electric kilns of various sizes where I teach.
All 5 have cracked bottoms. Improper support under the bottom,
position of shelf posts relative to bottom stand support and rapid
heating/cooling are all possible factors that may have contributed to
cracks of the IFB in the bottom of you and my kilns. One of our
larger (29" diameter) kilns has several cracks in the bottom (and
lid). I believe when the kiln heats up and the brick expand the crack
becomes smaller. If you're real concerned, purchase some kiln repair
cement and patch the crack.

The cracks close during firing. This is because the bricks expand
when heated.

The cracked bottom is rarely a safety issue, especially if the kiln
has a galvanized steel base under the brick bottom. Does it?

For those of you whose kilns do not have a galvanized steel base,
they are not difficult to add.
