I've tested so many glazes and am getting frustrated. I am trying to =
get a transparent cone 6 med. to med. dark cobalt blue that will fit =
Laguna's Dover white or WS-4 clay. The transparents I've achieved have =
crawled or crazed or speckled or gone opaque. Does anyone have any =
suggestions for a few recipes I can try that you have been successful =
with?

I have recently TESTED (only) the Saffire Blue from John Hesselberth's site
(www.frogpondpottery.com) (Thank you, John!). On Standard's #181 white
stoneware, in a Gare electric to ^6. This is a deep blue transparent that
looks as if it will be a winner for me. Did not run, crackle, craze, etc. This
was a small batch test only -- but you might have a look at the site and the
recipe to see if it might be a possibility.

I use one transparent, my own BB Clear.

Frit 3124 96 4.5 cups
Clay 10 1 cup
Silica 33 1 cup (scant, do not pack)
Bentonite 3 about 2T (?)

Joanne. I ain't got a clue what the problem is. BUT: I will go on
repeating till I am blue (3% cobalt in high magnesium glaze) in the face:
Are you testing the glazes on SEVERAL bodies? Are you testing it over a
homemade white slip that you really know what is in it?

Also: how much cobalt are you using? Are you sure it is "good"? Could some
dreck or other have gotten in?

UNLESS YOU TAKE CHARGE YOU WILL NEVER FIND OUT! Get two more bodies and
check what is going on. Get a magnesium free white: try Tucker's Smooth
White--also a buff clay, a red one, or mix your own. Make test tiles. Use
white slip, also magnesium free--on each tile as well as letting the basic
clay show. COMPARE RESULTS so you know it it is the glaze or the body....

And having said all that--might you be happier with a dark blue slip and a
clear glaze?

(No, my dears. I have nothing against magnesium. It just is that it turns
cobalt purplish.)

Joanne, go to my web site:

http://www.angelfire.com/art2/shambhalapottery

I have several pages of photos with recipes for cone 6 glazes. I have at
least one version of a transparent there with a couple of blue and teal, as
well as other color variations. If you want it more transparent just omit the
opacifier. If you want a plain medium blue/dark blue, then just add 1-2%
cobalt carbonate or cobalt oxide.
If you're tried many glazes with no luck, and they're glazes others have used
successfully, there may be other problems that may need addressing. For
instance, you may be applying the glaze too thickly, or on ware that is not
clean. Perhaps you are not bisquing high enough or firing at the right
temperature,etc.etc.
Whenever I seriously test a glaze, I test it on a few bodies, and often will
put the tile in different parts of the kiln, particularly when I was doing
C10 reduction. Also, dip the tile once, somewhat thinly, the redip half of it
again. This will give you an indication of the proper thickness for that
glaze. I sometimes do three dips on the same tile.
I would tend to apply a clear glaze on the thin side, particularly on
porcelain or a porcelaneous stoneware.
If you keep having fit problems and you have corrected things that you can
control, then you may just need to find a better claybody.

June Perry
