I use paperclay in an extruder all the time. Just experiment
until you find the right amount of moisture for a smooth
extrusion. Same advice holds for ANY clay you may
push through an extruder. Plus practice, practice.

Has anyone used paperclay in an extruder? We just finished building a David
Hendley bumperjack extruder, and I made a die for a wall with a double beaded
lip for an oval baker, and the extrusion looked mealy...had to smooth it out
with a rib. I tried again with a straight clay, and it too looked a little
mealy. I made the die out of baltic birch plywood with a 20 degree slant;
maybe it needs to be more angled? Roseanne Gault's book didn't talk about
extruders at all...
Any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks!

I rroutinely used paper clay in my extruder and didn't see any problem with
"mealiness". I used baltic birch dies and didn't do anything special to the
cut as you talked about. Is your clay of the right consistency. Soft but
not sticky? I found that tall extruded items from paper clay stood up
better than non paper clay. I would check the wetness of the clay.
