skutt kiln/runny glazes

Hi Barbara,

Just checked Clayart after a few days off. You got responses from people far more experienced than I, but I have found that my Skutt 1027 consistently fires low in Cone Fire mode. I use it to bisque (setting it at Cone 05 and usually getting a cone 06 per witness cones). For glaze firings, I use ramp/hold method. I'll be reporting back to Clayart on that subject tomorrow after unloading the kiln. I do know, also, that I tend to get a pretty significant variation in temperature reached depending on location in the kiln.

Joan

I wonder if this option was mentioned, as its oiften unpopular,
Have you considered changing the elements. I read something like if you
fire to cone ten you should really consider changing elements every 10
firings or so, and about every 24 at cone 6. something like 40 at low fire
only useage. One of those technical handouts the kanthal people put
together, or in a cermics industry rag.

Of course we know you can get more firings than this out of an element, its
hte urge to have them fire with this consistant accuracy that you mentioned
that would need it.

The location temp difference is something to be left to physics discussion
groups. I'd forget about it, as you cna find out why but not do alot about
it other than some obvious things you probably thought of.
