I was at a crafts fair this past fall and saw the most amazing velvet raku
glazes. Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to talk to potter. I'm wondering
if anyone knows where I can get more information on these glazes (Bright
fairly uniform colors-velvet to fine sand surface, blues, reds, greens, purples
etc) Thanks for any help

These sound like Amaco Velvets to me. I've seen them
used as raku glazes. Certainly they are available in the
colors that you mention.

There is one glaze called velvet raku it is high alumina glaze ( high for ^08) .
Ask raku people I do not keep anymore the lists of raku glazes.
Try the Peter King raku glaze, Ithink yiou may like it.

Can't say much about the Amaco glazes (never tried 'em), but it sounds more
like a well-done copper matte to me. We have a piece done by Ed Riszak
(sp?), ostensibly the creator of copper matte, that contains all of those
colors plus more with a velvet/sand texture. Gorgeous.

I was using Velvets from Amaco for Raku before i got my nasty old Alpine. I
would smoke lightley. I didnt want to totally blacken out the colors.
Thats when i learned to use a airbrush, i also used masking tape and other
masks.
