It is only certain Clay bodies - designed for cone 6 - that will not do
well in reduction - those containing more then a little iron.
It is because reduced iron fluxes more.
All the white or near white bodies should do just fine including c6 porcelains.
If you wanted a darker body - Tuckers has some for cone 8 - some of them
might work well at cone 6 in reduction - make sure you check the absorbency
before you make any assumptions.
Mixing a cone 10 reduction body with an iron bearing cone 6 body might be
worth experimenting with - 50/50, 25/75 and 75/25% for starters - do the
absorbency tests to see if you have the proper - keep the absorbency about
2% for stoneware.
Remember - firing a clean bisque is very important when firing darker
bodies in reduction.
I'm signing off ClayArt for a week starting tomorrow (Sat.) - I'll be out
of town for a week - if anyone has questions about this I'll answer when I
get back - after Jan 20.

I have been firing a propane kiln to cone 9-10 reduction for thirty =
years. I used all the same bodies for electric firings on occasion. =
Now I want to fire at cone 6 reduction. I am having trouble finding =
suitable bodies. In Canada Plainsman Clay advises me that the cone 6 =
clays are not suitable. I did one firing using 370, and 340.The 370 =
had too many cracks ,on lids for example. The 340 was an unpleasant =
colour in reduction. Are there any good reduction 6 bodies out there =
available in Canada? Thanks...I'd appreciate any info.

Alice,
I have fired Laguna Cone 5 B-mix to cone 6 without a problem. It goes a
light buff in reduction in my experience. If you have further questions on
applications and availability I would have to refer you to Laguana Clay Co.

a3 - I have had good results in cone 6 reduction with Desert Buff from
Highwater Clay in Asheville, N.C. They also make a speckled Desert Buff
that works well. Also Standard's 119 has worked for me, but test
absorbtion. I have had problems at the low end of clay bodies that say they
have a long range. I am really enjoying cone 6 reduction and a new color
range of glazes at this temperature. Good luck and let me know if you find
other bodies. Oh - the worst results I have had involve bodies high in
manganese and iron which so many cone 6 bodies for electric contain. They
bloat and generally get over fluxed from the iron. Enjoy - Bobbie
