I would suggest "The Spirit of Clay" by Robert Piepenburg
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/096284814X/rakuclayartis-20
He is a wonderful artist and created this book to be used as a textbook in
the classroom.
I wrote a small review of this book at:

appreciated.

I was wondering if someone could suggest any other quality textbook that would challenge my students. John:
If there is one 'text' I wish I would have had in my early pottery
experience it is Functional Pottery: Form and Aesthetic in Pots of
Purpose, by Robin Hopper,(Krause:2000). I received it as a gift, and my
wife carefully inked out the price, but I suspect it is no more money than
a newer edition of Nelson's book, and in my view (I am not teacher) it
would be far more valuable as a practical aid to the committed student of
ceramics than Nelson's broad overview. I keep Hopper's book handy by my
bedside since receiving it two Christmases ago. I haven't opened my old
edition of Nelson in years.
