Hi all,
I haven't applied to a show with slides for awhile, but am about
to take a roll of slide film. Is it okay to have a grouping of
pots in one slide? Say a platter and vase with related glaze
treatment? Or mugs with a pitcher?
Take Care

Jennifer -
As long as there is a strong connection between the pieces, and as long as
they look good together, it is fine. I would limit the slides with multiple
pots to not more than two out of a group of five, for example, but such
slides can be an important addition to the group. Normal groupings include
sets of dinnerware, cups and teapot, mugs and pitcher, etc. And when you
group a vase and a platter with closely related glaze treatment, it shows
that you have some control over the medium.
Good luck -

Most shows specify one item per slide in their application.

Fill the whole slide with that one image - get as close up as you possibly
can and make certain they are in focus.

A helpful hint is to look at the pots in the articles in the current
"Ceramic Monthly" magazines - images are sharp, close up, with no discernable
background - your slides should come as close to these criteria as possible.

For your own records and for that one show out of hundreds that might want a
group shot, take a few 'group' slides also. Don't send in a group slide
unless the application specifically says to.

It depends upon the kind of show you are talking about.
If you mean a fair of some kind, then probably groupings
are ok. If you mean a juried show that is essentially an
exhibition - then it depends. If your "entry" is a pitcher and
mugs, then a grouping is fine. If your intent is to just get
more "stuff" before the juror, then - not a good idea. In
the exhibitions that I have coordinated, the juror has NEVER
selected work submitted as "groupings" unless it was meant
to SHOW as a group: a teapot & cups, a pitcher and tumblers,
a tray with items on top, etc. The tricky part of any such
grouping, of course, is that the pieces must relate not only in
glaze surface, but in form, size, etc. If not, no hope. In my
experience.
