Wedging without a wire.
Saw this in Bristol back in the 70s.
Lift the clot of clay above your head hands gripping sides lightly,
bring down smartly onto the edge of the stout bench (grunt)
so as to cleave it through the centre,=20
half now on table, other still in hands and down near your knees.
Bring this back above your head and slam it onto piece stuck to bench =
(grunt).
Peel off, rotate piece in hands 1/4 turn,
repeat until the concistency is even and all the wind is out of the =
clay and you.
Follow up with kneading spiral or otherwise.
.It really cuts the mustard as a technique and will get those shoulders =
all nice and loose too.
( Grunts are optional but screams may be necessary if your aim is not so =
hot)=20

Dear Paul Stubbs=20

This subject was aired a few years ago on Clayart. I spoke of it as =
Sunderland Wedging. Twenty one slaps and shears and you have a block of =
clay with more than a million layers, usually airless as well.

Anyone learning for the first time should watch their knuckles. It hurts =
if you contact the bench with twenty pounds of clay in your mitts.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis
