We have two Visioneers, one of which is an 8820, one touch/USB. The machine
it's on is an HP running ME. The only suggestion I can give you is to be
sure the power is 'ON' on the scanner before you boot the computer. This
lets the machine know that the scanner is present.
Ours work fine.

Sorry to take up band width here folks but I am stuck.
For all who might respond please do so via P-mail.
I have a new Visioneer OneTouch 8700 USB scanner. I also have a Compaq
computer, model 5304 with USB Controller SIS 7001. I absolutely cannot
get the computer to recognize the scanner after all the software is
loaded including the proper drivers. Windows (ME) recognized the
hardware, set up the Scanner software, but after that nothing. When the
computer boots the Scanner software pops up a window that says "Finding
Scanner" runs a few minutes, then changes and says Scanner not
connected. Device manager says the USB ports are operating properly, but
there is no indication of the scanner anywhere. I have been on all
over on the 'Net and have not found a solution. And I have learned that
there is a widespread problem generally with this USB controller
recognition business.
USB ports are definitely problematic!!! If anybody on the list can
possibly help, it would be majorly appreciated.
Again, please respond off list.
Thanks,

The joy of installing something new. If you haven't already,
--completley uninstall software and drivers and reinstall EXACTLY in the
order the instructions say, and I do mean exactly--simply plugging something
in out of order can screw it all up as drivers are picky.
--check the website of the scanner to see if their are updates or special
drivers
--call tech support--you paid for it possibly when you bought it
--I'm not sure of the model or cost of what you bought, but remember, you
get what you pay for.
And lastly,
If all else fails, bring it back and get something else. A scanner is not
something to cheap out on, so get a good one. You usually can't go wrong
with Nikon, Canon, or Minolta. HP has the rumor of using used or recycled
parts. I have an HP I am not happy with. For a fact, HP does not make
superior scanners. Type "scanner + review" to find sites that review
scanners as a shopping aid. You want to find the reviews written by pros
who use this stuff every day. They tell it like it is, usually.
Thank you.

John,
Try going to the web site of your scanner manufacturer and see if they have
an updated driver for the system. Your driver may be faulty -- another
possibility.
I'm responding from the Yahoo Clayart list, so I can't see your email
address, but if you're on AOL, don't use AOL to download the driver. Instead,
go to Explorer or Netscape to download it.
You will also have to completely remove the install and do a clean reinstall.
I had a similar problem recently with my Lexmark Scanner and after repeated
calls to Lexmark, I finally found a tech who knew how to get the thing
working. He had me erase a whole spool directory and walked me through the
install, skipping some of the options. Keep calling the manufacturers help
line if downloading a new driver, etc. doesn't resolve the problem.

June Perry

Try this.
When the computer is on and also when the scanner is on, unplug the scanner
and then plug it in again. This allows the computer to load in the proper
driver.
Also you might try this by unplugging the scanner when everything is on: wait
a few minutes and power down and then turn everything on again.
This has worked for me on a printer and I see no reason why this will not
work for your scanner.
Good luck.

Other people have suggested uninstalling and reinstalling being careful
to keep order of installation correct also look up on web site of
scanner for new drivers etc.
The only thing I would add is that when I run into computer
hardware/software issues I also will go to http://www.google.com - click
on the Groups tab and search. This searches the internet news groups. If
you find something view thread and look through all the postings.
Sometimes what you find is garbage - other times it can be very helpful.
