Personally, I like Painter. It started out as an Adobe program, and has
passed through many incarnations. I stopped upgrading a few years ago. The
newer ones handle type well, as well as layering. I just like to draw with
it. If you also have a wacom stylus to use with it, you can do a lot of
original art work. It has allowed me to experiment with decoration, and try
new things that have later appeared on my pots. There is some carry over to
Photo shop, probably because of the Adobe connection.
From Rikki in Berkeley, where it is very cold, finally.

Yes, lots of people use Adobe Illustrator, but not everyone is an
Illustrator person. I prefer Freehand because it better fits the way I
think and draw. If you can try before you buy then you will find the
one that is the best for you. It used to be that Illustrator was the
best for handling type, but there is not much difference now. What
ever you buy stick with it and try to take a class. It will help you
more than you can imagine if you are not experience in the way the
drawing software works. Also a digital pad is a great investment.

Strata 3-D is good to make forms that can be viewed at different angles,
with many lighting options, textures, transparency, and reflection.
An image on my site has a photo of a student sitting at the potter's
wheel mapped onto a pottery form with reflections added from the
foreground. The 3-d pic was put into Photoshop for the background and
other photo. Email me off list if you want a copy at full resolution.

I use Illustrator when needed for drawing. Photoshop as needed for
creating and editing. Dabbler is a cheap program from the makers of
Painter. Good for annimations and works with graphic tablets.
