Can someone tell me how does the Pottery Making Illustrated compare to
Ceramic Monthly...I am looking for a magazine that illustrates and talking
more about Functional pottery?

Cheers,
Debbie

Subject: PMI NCECA Issue

The latest issue of Pottery Making Illustrated is now in the mail. This
issue is the first of our sixth year in publication (oh, how time flies),
and we've tried something a little different. WIth NCECA just around the
corner, we asked Richard Burkett to coordinate some articles from the San
Diego area for the issue and he did an outstanding job! Due to his efforts,
we feature five SD artists: Richard demonstrating an organic burnout
technique (http://www.potterymaking.org/learn.html), Gary Carlos explains
two basic tilemaking techniques, Ed Thompson showing how he does slip
marbling and then transferring the design to a form, Eric Rempe details his
adventure in building a small woodburning kiln, and David Cuzick provides an
overview of his construction of a gas-fired soda kiln. In addition, Helen
Bates has provided a list of must-see San Diego sites at
http://www.potterymaking.org/pmionline.html

PMI is pleased to announce that it will once again be a major underwriter
for the Clayart room at NCECA this year. Mel has done an outstanding job in
coordinating this feature, and we look forward to another successful year!

I see Ceramics Monthly as the white collar magazine and Pottery Making
Illustrated as the blue collar one. I subscribe to both.

Recently I gave Pottery Making Illustrated to a friend (just starting out in
Pottery) after considering those two and also Clay Times. Pottery Making
Illustrated has more down-to-earth, how-to content. Ceramics Monthly has a
more inspirational touch showing the varied work of many artists.

I will tell you: In the Ceramic monthly you see pots that you wish you will be able to
make one day in the future.
From The PMI you learn how to make them today!

The PMI is one of my best learning tools: If there was a copyright about the stuff I
learnt there - I would have to close my studio!

Hi Debbie,

FYI, CM= Ceramics Monthly, CT= Clay Times, and PMI= Pottery Making
Illustrated.

Boy are you opening a huge can of snakes with this question!!!!! CM has
been around, (according to the cover on the most recent issue) for 50 years.
I am not aware that any of the other mags have been around that long. It is
certainly well done and nicely put-together, glossy photos, good paper,
etc., HOWEVER..... I stopped taking CM several years back because Clay
Times and PMI offer more of what I want with regard to instruction and 'down
to earth'-ness. CM seems to me to be more for the academic and collector
type crowd, with articles less about 'how the potter did the work' than 'how
he felt and what tradition he ws trying to copy or be a part of' when he
made the work.

PMI is specifically designed, as its name implies, to show HOW TO
information - step by step instructions with photos, for various projects
and techniques.

Clay Times is sort of a blend between CM and PMI. I think, based on what
you said above, that you want CT and PMI rather than CM. To decide for
yourself, have a hop on over to Borders or Bunns and Noodle booksellers;
they usually carry all 3 of the mags and you can take 'em over to the coffee
area to check 'em out before purchasing whichever you like best.

Pottery Making Illustrated is more a "how to" and Ceramics Monthly is
more of a "why". PMI tends to cover mostly functional ware, and CM
covers a broader spectrum of ceramic work.

There is also Clay Times, which, IMHO, is also more how-to.
