I don't know about other towns and their laws, but here if it is
"portable" you don't need no stinkin permits.
My hot tub weighs 1000 lbs empty, but is classified portable and
does not need a permit (the electricity to it does).
The kiln I finished recently is a tophat (no door or lid) all fiber in a
welded steel frame and I welded handles on it. It's portable. It is on a
slab poured just for it with the A frame hoist screwed to it. Give me a
sledge hammer and the slab is portable too. It is operated with hoses
to propane tanks, very portable.
Check your local building codes.
The new propane laws are nationwide and are stiffer than most local
codes. The propane seller that I found here that has done lots of kiln
hookups says that the kiln has to be "manufactured" and not
homebuilt. It needs all kinds of electrically operated safety devices
and pilots etc and has to be professionally built. I can't afford a
professionally built kiln, and thus far have not found any tophat kilns
for sale. I have to have this design as I am a criple and can't get those
large pots into a toploader or through a front door, not to mention the
shelves, I must be able to get to the stack from all sides.
So my kiln is "portable", body, tanks, burners, A frame and slab.
And yes, Mel, i took your advise and ITCed the whole thing, body,
floor, burner ports, exit port, kiln shelves both sides and post too. I
have to really hold it back it wants to climb fast.

I had posted to this list the fact that I wanted to try building a Steve=20
Mills design small scale wood burning kiln in my backyard. I am about to=20
abandon the effort.
While I was able to get my local City Building and Planning departments=20
to agree that there would not be a city problem, I am not able to get my=20
neighbors to be fully comfortable with the idea.
Maybe later. I am not willing to move.
