I'd like to know if any European potters have any recommendations on the
best way to take/send a few (4-8) pots to the U.S.
I've always thought that packing them into carry-on luggage would be the
best. But have been told that there is now a weight limit of 5 kgs on
hand luggage on the flight that is already booked and paid for.
Any other suggestions of the least expensive way to get some pottery
into the US in one piece?
Thanks,
Linda
Asking for European potter soon to visit the US

Hi Linda,
I take pottery to the US every summer. I wrap each piece generously in
bubble wrap and disposable nappies/diapers (buy the appropriate size!) with
lots of tape around to seal. I use soft sided duffle bags instead of
suitcases and just pack the pots in with all my other stuff. I travel from
Dubai to London and then on to the US so the duffles go on and off aircraft
a few times and I haven't had any problems, yet. US Customs never cares
about the pots either; they just roll their eyes when I say I have pots I've
made in my luggage.
Best regards,
Carol

Wow, that's really restrictive! Better check with
the particular airline to get the straight dope for
sure. Carry-on really would be best. Putting them
into checked baggage is pretty good, too, though.
As rough as baggage handlers can be, they're still
kinder than most shipping services, and since your
bag is only going from you to the airplane and back
to you, with (maybe) a transfer or two, it will get
handled less often than a package that gets shipped
by normal channels. Pack really well, though. Make
sure that padding which won't shift is placed between
the pots. (Clothing works; sweaters are great.) And
use hard-sided luggage if possible.

I just got back from Armenia and noticed there are limits if the
European airports and I think also at Minneapolis about both the check
in and the carry on. Anything over 40 lbs. in baggage check-in would
cost additional and is was steep.I didn't see the airlines following
this new rule very closely.
