Hi:

Here's an off the wall request.

I'm going to Boulder, Co. in April to do a workshop and I want to try some
porcelain bodies from Mile Hi in Denver so I can tell the folks there what
to get for the workshop. I've received a box of Zen Porcelain from Mile Hi
but they don't have any Babu Porcelain and I'd like to give it a try. They
won't be mixing again for awhile, they say, so I'm wondering if there's
anyone out there who uses this stuff that could and would sell me a 25# bag.

regards, Craig Martell Hopewell, Oregon

Dear Craig,
I know that you are requesting Babu porcelain but you might want to try this
fabulous stuff from Laguna. It's called Southern Ice from Austrailia and
although it is a bit expensive (16.00 for 20lb bag) it is great to throw
with, fires out extremely white and very translucent. Great stuff!
Sincerely,
Kym Valvieja

Hello Kym:

Thanks for the suggestion.

I've thrown Southern Ice and it wouldn't work for what I do at
workshops. It's fussy and tempermental when it comes to drying and
finishing quickly. I have one day to throw pots and one day to turn,
finish, and decorate. I just couldn't do that with Southern Ice. Also,
the studio where I'm doing the workshop uses clays from Mile Hi in Denver
so I want to use what's available to them. That's why I asked for Mile
Hi's Babu Porcelain. Thanks to Clayarter Megan Ratchford, who lives in
Colorado, I will have 50# of Babu this week.

Thanx for the suggestion tho, Craig Martell Hopewell, Oregon

Craig,

I saw some Babu on the shelf at Leslies Ceramics (510-524-7363) in
Berkeley, CA yesterday.

Babu Porcelain is a very reliable body that has been
associated with Victor Babu, formerly of the Kansas
City Art Institute, but which actually originated with
Dave Cornell while he was head of the Bray Foundation
in Helena Montana. As Mary O'Connell has rightly posted,
the recipe is 55 Grolleg kaolin
20 Custer feldspar
13 Silica (200 mesh)
12 pyrophyllite (Pyrax)
2 Macaloid or Bentone MA
