question about pugger cleaning

updated fri 31 jan 03

Gail Dapogny on wed 29 jan 03

Some months back, the question came up re. cleaning/not cleaning puggers
when changing clay. I kept Vince's reply, and also the other one that
appeared--forget who, but would like more "ammunition" from those of you
who don't clean when changing between two fairly similar clay bodies. I am
talking about going from porcelain to white stoneware.
Any help, rational views, logical explanations, etc. appreciated.

Hi Gail,

I use a couple of ^10 white bodies which I run thru the same mill. They are
essentially the same clay, just one is modified to take thermal shock for
horse-hair.
When going from the HH clay to SW I just use what is in the mill. When
going from SW to HH I purge the machine dry, then pug through the new clay
until I've run thru ~10# of new stuff, dut that off and set it aside to use
to purge the HH when finished. I'll usually run ~200# of HH to 1,000# SW.
I don't ever run brown clay thru this machine.

I did clean it down to bare metal once. I was experiencing black hard
material in my pugged clay, and when cleaning out the machine, discovered
deposits on the inside of the barrel which I suspect was a result of the
aluminum barrel reacting with the clay. Wire brushed it down & have not had
the problem for over a year.
