Carla,

You got your wires crossed (backwards) somewhere. Check all the
connections to make sure + goes to + and - goes to -.

good luck,

Reverse the wires on the thermocouple. Red is NEGATIVE on all
thermocouples.

Okay, I will admit it up front, I feel like a complete idiot. So here is my
problem.

I have an older electric kiln (with an Orton AutoFire kiln sitter) and
finally got around to ordering a new thermocouple. I called the place that
made my kiln to make sure I ordered the right one. It arrived and it is
straight, the one on the kiln is straight, but curves to attach to the
outside of the kiln. I called the company and they said, this is the new
version and I just put the red wire to the positive and yellow wire to the
negative and I am good to go.

There are 4 screws on the new one. The middle two have the metal from the
wire that goes into the kiln, so I put the wire into the outside screws, and
made sure red to positive and yellow to negative.

Problem - I turned it on to see if I did it correctly. It started warming
up, and appeared fine, but then the kiln sitter said it was 35 degrees and
dropping rapidly. The kiln is in my house, so no chance of that.

Help!!!!

When digital temperature readout shows the kiln getting cooler as
it heats, the thermocouple wires have been hooked up backwards.

If the thermocouple wires are reversed at one location, reversing
the wires at another location will not fully correct the problem.

Example: You remove the controller and find that the thermocouple
wires are on the correct terminals on the back of the controller.
This means that the wires are reversed at the thermocouple block,
since temperature is falling. If you reverse the wires at the
controller, the temperature readout will appear to be correct, but
it will not be accurate.

The thermocouple wires must be on their correct terminals at both
the thermocouple block and the controller. Reversing wires at the
controller to avoid gaining access to the thermocouple block will
not fully correct the problem.
