kona f4 feldspar source

updated fri 7 feb 03

Does anyone know a source of Kona F4 on the West Coast? (We know what
people say in their catalogues, and that they will even give you a price
quote, but then say they cannot get the material...) We need to ship to
Hawai'i.
Thanks

Suzanne,

Have you tried Laguna Clay? I was also going to look into ordering some on
Monday the 3rd, but was not aware that this would be hard to find.
Is there another feldspar substance that could be used as a substitute for
Kona F4?
Any information would be helpful.

Thank you,

As usual in these cases I have two words for you: Hammill & Gillespie.
8000-454-8846. Fax 973-994-3650. 154 South Livingston Avenue, PO Box 104
Livingston, NJ 07039.

They are the major source as far as I know of spars, whiting, clays and
whatnot. They know everything. They also are the most wonderful and
helpful people. If you do not find a dealer out where you are, they
probably can tell you who is, or find a direct solution.

And I neither have a commercial interest in them, nor am I related to them.
I just have been grateful to them for some fifty years....

Craig Martell on mon 3 feb 03

Hi:

Last time I looked at their website, The Clay Art Center in Tacoma, Wa. had
F-4. www.clayartcenter.com

I've used Unispar 50 from Unimin Specialty Minerals, Spruce Pine, NC since
running out of F-4. The fusion buttons of F-4 and Unispar 50 are almost
identical and I've not seen any differences in the glazes since subbing
Unispar 50.

regards, Craig Martell Hopewell, Oregon

Rob,

The last time I purchased what I thought was Kona F-4 from Pine Ridge, wh=
at
you carried was Unispar. Are you now carrying the real Kona F-4 or is it
the Unispar substitute?

Thanks in advance.

Veena

Veena:

We have Minspar 200 F-4 Soda Feldspar, which the Minspar catalog calls Kona
spar. This is Minspar's designation, so I'm working on the assumption that
they are accurate in this. I have a 50-lb sack of it in my warehouse right
now, and can order as much as you need.

Greetings all----My inventory says 47,500 pounds of Kona F4 currently in
stock. If you don't want to order direct, try your local Laguna distributor.

Rob,

Thanks for your reply.

You are right in that what I purchased from Pine Ridge, thinking it was
Kona F-4, was Minspar not Unispar. I have been given to understand from
potters, who have used Minspar that it does not worked the same way as F-=
4
in their glazes. They advised me to get the actual Kona F-4.
