Dear Paul Lewing,

You say <use for glazes) will ever dissolve in water.>>

If by this you mean all Manganese compounds are insoluble in water I =
suggest you check the data books like CRC Handbook or Kaye and Laby. My =
reading is that there are several Manganese compounds which are soluble =
in cold water.

Beware the dreaded generalisation.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis

I feel guilty here. Is there not manganese sulfate that would disolve in
water? HOWEVER: What began all this, I fear, is that I told Kristin that
her manganese was very soluble in glaze. I was corrected for this careless
writing because I should have said "in a glaze in the firing."
So rude not to be precise. Apologies.

OK, Ivor. I believe you. I should have said manganese carbonate and
manganese dioxide are not soluble in water. You're right about
generalizations. As Oliver Wendell Holmes said, "All generalizations are
false, including this one".

Dear Paul Lewing,=20

Thanks Mate, and also to our Gracious Lily Krakowski for her forthright =
response. To add to her contribution of Sulphate I would add Chloride =
and Nitrate.

I wonder how many people have used these compounds in that Soluble Salt =
technique of colouring Porcelain and white stoneware. If so, what sort =
of results did they get?

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia
