Helen Bates Clayart Picks February 5th. 2003

Hello, I think I'm finally --all-- caught up! Here are the latest
links:

Sarah Roush (Pakucah, KY, USA)
http://www.kentuckycrafts.org/roush.htm
Hand-built, low-fire ceramic sculpture using low-fire glazes "in much
the same manner that one would paint."
The interesting part of this site is the description of Sarah's work to
transform a derelict century-old downtown Padukah, Kentucky office
building into an artist's and reader's haven.
Her studio is now on the third floor (I hope it has an elevator!), while
she rents most of the rest of the building to a "Books on Broadway" and
an architectural and engineering firm. There is gallery space too, on
the second floor, and an apartment.
The amazing thing about this is that Sarah put both her money and her
health on the line for this project, and came through it admirably.
The article on the "Holidazzle" site is from 2000. I hope Sarah is
doing well.

Barb Jensen & Mick Marineau (Portland, OR, USA)
Jensen and Marineau Home
Barb is a painter and hand-builder, specializing in blue and white
motifs; Mick is a thrower and sculptor.
Handsome handmade Ceramics, Sinks and Tile. The artists' personal tiled
bathroom installation is a fine example of their work.
Many of Barb's tile designs are shown on the site. The small images can
be clicked on to view medium-sized more detailed enlargements.
(Boy, I love that kitchen!)

Brian Gartside (Ceramic DesigNZ) (Pukehohe, NZ)
http://www.gartside.info/
Strongly coloured mid-temperature stoneware plates with highly textured
glazes. Also articles written for the New Zealand "Potter" magazine
describing easy and low-tech methods for glazing and clay formulation.
Lots of pictures of glaze samples, paper clay construction and more.
Brian recently re-joined Clayart, he told me, after having "retired"
from the list for a while. The site has most sections completed, but
more is to come. Unique entry page featuring stars in the Southern sky.

Quinn Loggins - "Empty Bowls Song"
http://www.quinnloggins.com/
Quin Loggins recorded the Song "Empty Bowls" at the Belcourt Theater in
Nashville, TN, USA.
Although this Tennessee musician's site has a scattering of fairly mild
50's style pin-up art, the "Empty Bowls" tune is really quite "sad and
sweet", and worth checking out. I particularly like the accoustic
version.
The download uses "QuickTime", so you must have that installed for your
browser.
Thanks to N.K. for bringing this site to my attention:
'The empty bowls in Nashville was connected with the Belcourt Theater,
and I noticed, on his website, Quinn performs there. I'm not sure how he
is connected except that the hard copy of the cd is in a jacket that is
labeled Empty Bowls on the front with a simple graphic of two bowls and
the empty bowl logo. On the back in large letters it says "all proceeds
help to fight hunger".'
The C.D. referred to is not for sale on the web site, but there is an
e-mail address somewhere there, and perhaps Mr. Loggins has some copies
available that he can sell to anyone interested enough to contact him.

HUDCO Bhawan, India Habitat Centre
http://www.ficci.com/ficci/hudco-buildtech.htm
Housing & Public Works Committee discussion paper re: uses of clay alone
or in combination with other materials in building affordable housing in
India. (Text only)
Fiji Museum
http://www.fijimuseum.org.fj/fm-educ-materials-pots.htm
Online Educational Materials - Clay Pots - elementary school lesson plan
perhaps?

Hello Paul,

Yes, I have, in fact. I sent your name to Bill Amsterlaw to add to the
Clayarters' urls page he keeps on his web site. If you go to
and search for your name you will find
there are two "GO" links to urls that have something to do with you. The
second one has a comment beside it that lets the searcher know that you are
the webmaster for the NZ Soc. of Potters. (The first is to your page at the
Otago Polytechnic.)

I will need to take a more leisurely look at the New Zealand Potters site.
It looks very comprehensive. Most active links I've tried tonight are
functioning well. I realize the site is very new and some directories are
only "placeholders", so to speak at the moment. However, you might check
the "Workshops" link from the frame menu. It jumps to the "Membership"
page.

Regards,

Helen

Hi folks,

I forgot the url for Barb Jensen (Clayarter) and her partner in clay Mick
Marineau in my latest "surfing" post, so here's that listing again, with
the url:

Barb Jensen & Mick Marineau (Portland, OR, USA)
http://www.jensenandmarineau.com/index.htm
Barb is a painter and hand-builder, specializing in blue and white
motifs; Mick is a thrower and sculptor.
Handsome handmade Ceramics, Sinks and Tile. The artists' personal tiled
bathroom installation is a fine example of their work.
Many of Barb's tile designs are shown on the site. The small images can

Hi Helen,

Thank you for taking the time to look at the NZPotters site and thank you
for alerting me to the incorrect link. I have fixed that now.

At present while their are a lot of potters per head of population in New
Zealand there are very few that have their own websites.

It is hoped that the NZSP site will encourage potters in New Zealand to make
the effort to develop web resources. We are at present planning to provide
NZSP members with an self-editable page of their own and we hope that this
will lead to some developing their own sites.

Kind regards,

Lawrence Ewing
