Thanks for all your suggestions. I have a Kiln Master controller on a Skutt
kiln and if you program to fire to ^ 6 it will do it automaticly. Can anyone
advise me on how to slow down the cooling time after the firing is done. I
can hold the end temperature for as long as I want, but I can't find
anything in the directions on how to program the cooling process.

Thanks, Ronnie

I'm firing a Skutt 1027-3 with a Kilnmaster Controller. There are 2 methods
to firing the kiln using the controller- cone fire or ramp/hold mode.
I generally use the cone fire to bisque fire my cone 6 stoneware. However,
I use the ramp/hold for glaze firings. I don't know what edition of the
instruction booklet you have but I have Edition 3 Feb. 1998. About half way
through the book are examples of ramp/hold programs. (pg 26 in my book).
One of the examples is cone 5 firing with a slow cool. It can easily be
adapted for cone 6 and beyond if you wish. A note- when programming the
kiln I do it on paper first and use the cone table included in the booklet.
You may find that you need to adjust the final temperature of the kiln to
get the effects you want. Experiment and keep good records. I have a
record of every time I've fired either my Skutt or the old Evenheat I
started with (and still have). Remember- if you do try to vary the program
change one thing at a time. Don't change the final temp, the hold times,
and the cooling rate all at once or you will have no idea what actually
worked. Like you I learned most of my ceramics in a studio not associated
with an art department. The studio's potter was very forthcoming with
information about firing, reference books and other basic stuff needed to
set up a home studio. Good luck!

Ronnie, if you don't have an up to date copy of the Skutt Manual, you can
download one (free) from

Make sure that you pay attention to the instructions for "skip step" as=20
that is how you can move on to the slow cool steps after you have reached=20
