old paragon raku conversion

Hello all:

My teacher and I lucked into a pair of well-used Paragon High-fire
kilns. My teacher wants to convert hers to a raku kiln and I have begun
the appropriate research but I have a few feasibility questions for the
list.

The kiln is 19"x17"x17" (internal) cube top loader. The brick is not in
great shape: several cracks in the sides and major cracks in the lid.
I'm concerned that when we cut the flue hole in the lid, the brick will
be encouraged to go ahead and take a dive out of its stainless steel
jacket. Is that a real issue? Also, burner port configurations--any
good ones other than through the side?

I have an old Duncan set up as a raku kiln. I opted to make a hard
firebrick bottom with insulated fire brick as the floor, with the kiln
just sitting on the brick. I made the opening into the kiln through the
floor and did not cut any holes through the kiln walls. That way there
is no damage or weakening of the kiln wall. Floor bricks were arranged
so the flame pattern is circular. Four inch hole in the lid is the vent
and a piece of broken shelf laid partially over the hole is the damper.
Works so far. For heat source I use a propane fired cast iron venturi
burner from Ward's.
