pottery from china passed off as made in usa

I need your Help!!!
I have always suspected that many companies having ceramics made
in China were trying to fraudulently pass them off as Made in the USA.
This week I experienced it first hand.

Companies with names like Americaware, Susie's Pottery of Sacramento, etc...
The work was colorful painted slipware much like the studio
work that is known as handcrafted (Droll Designs, Chesapeake East,
McGoveny Camerot....)

Less than 10% of all ceramics shown at New York Gift have country of
origin labels (Made In China, etc). (Required by law!)

When asked about where the items are made, the reps or company staff
state.. here! When challenged they admit that the work comes from China.

One guy stated... "No one seems to really care, anyway"
(I answered... The US government cares enough to put a $100,000 fine
attached to
fraud regarding misrepresenting country of origin.)
"Another stated... "It makes me feel good to know that I'm helping
the poor of China"
(I asked him whether he was a member of the Fair Trade Federation...
he said no!)

Again and again throughout the day... I tested many exhibitors. The
response was
dismal. Other exhibitors at the Gift Show tell me that "where is this made" is
often the first question any buyer has!

I am preparing some documentation for my congressman (who overlooks the customs
department and laws regarding these issues)

I need your stories... with details (names and dates)! Please send me
your knock off, peel off (labels) and fraud tales!
Thanks,
Wendy

Wendy,

Sorry that I am not giving the help you asked for. But be warned: there is
no Susie's Pottery of Sacramento. I checked.

Dear Wendy:

Go Girl!!

Look up the "Made in Alaska" program. I think it can be found on the
Alaska State web site. It may give you some help on how to deal with
this issue. The program deals with the imported junk that competes with
ligitimate work made by Alaska Natives and Alaska Artists. Knowledge of
how it works may help.

Good hunting.
