Dear Theresa,
First step is to a make a selection of line blends with a variety of =
compounds. I suggest the existing Spar, a different Spar which contains =
and alternative alkali element to the one in the glaze, and Nepheline =
Syenite. I suggest using dry weights rather than mixing slurries though =
this is an acceptable method if you wish to use it. I also suggest five =
% increments until you get a 50/50 mixture
An alternative is to try out Ian Currie's way of doing things. This is =
on the web if you Google along. There are other ways if you search the =
archives.
The second step comes if you find a sample from your efforts which gives =
you the prime surface you need. Do a 7 by 7 cross blend with the common =
colouring agents including Rutile. This will give you 28 tiles.
From then on fine tune until you get what you really want.
A shame to waste twenty litres glaze.
Hope you have great success.

Hi Ivor and all!

I will try what you say. It sounds sound and wise. We have loads of "Nephsy" in this scandic area. I just bought rutile today, and will start crossblendng tonight. I tried another version that seems to have worked out nicely, but is a bit complicated, though. I have mixed some unusually unsuccessful "Howells' Ash Glaze" which runs and goes all alkaline earth crunchy where thick. I double dipped first in the dry white for 3 sec and then in the ash for 1 sec. It melts and streaks in a funny way, but it is very tricky to get even and without those small dents and scratches that I seem to make everytime I glaze. I can photograph and post if anyone's interested.

Als, I'm working on Michael Bailey's brilliant iron orange, and it only tuns out dull brown. Has anyone tried it and have any suggestions?

Theresa
