As I attempt to remember clay classes and firing back in undergrad
school I seem to recall making some little clay "kiln gods" after
seeing a film about firing a climbing kiln in Japan. Prior to the
firing an offering of rice and wine was made. Perhaps the habit of
some to create little clay figures (read: kiln gods) had its
beginnings here and has been perpetuated by teachers, their students,
then their students, etc. Just plain silly to think the practice has
any real meaning.
FYI, haven't made any kiln gods in many, many years and can only
remember a couple of totally screwed up firings.
Bill, where here in Fredericksburg, Va. we had about 6" of snow, then
an additional 6" of sleet! Gonna take a couple of days to dig outta
this one.
