I also grew up looking at the Statues and the Windows and the
Architecture , listening to the Latin sing song verse, smelling
occasional frankincense. As a child I was glad it was there, as I have a
brain that savors the tactile and the visible and input to the senses.

There is a book called "The Alphabet Versus the Goddess: the Conflict
Between Word and Image" , by Leonard Shlain.
It is a history of that very conflict, through the ages and through
various religions.

The book deals largely with the ascendancy of literacy and how the
written word has affected religion, culture, history. It focuses on
cultures of the Israelites, Greeks, Christians and Muslims.

I have to say that Shlain presents his own very strong theory
throughout the book, and I do not agree with all of his conclusions.
However some of the historical material is quite fascinating .
Shlain has written another book called "Art and Physics" which I have
not read
