asbestos in gloves?

Hi-
Does anyone know if the old thick white gloves from 15-20 years ago ever had
asbestos in them? I have a number of them that we use with raku that could
be as old as the school at which I teach, 40 years.

Even if they do, I wouldn't worry. The hazard of
asbestos is from inhalation of dust. While doing
raku, you're probably wearing a dust mask anyway,
right? And even if you're not, you aren't spending
that much time around the gloves, nor abrading them
in any major way. If they work for you, keep them.
Asbestos IS hazardous, but many people have made
fortunes whipping up a panic all out of proportion
to the actual danger.

Yes, they contained asbestos. I used to have a pair that were
bought by government contract. Right on the label it said,
"gloves, asbestos, spec.# 5747838, vendor # 2939, etc.".
After years of use, these gloves became frayed, and pieces
of the gloves would, indeed, flake off. In light of what we know
about friable asbestos today, I would not permit them to be used
in a school situation.
I would consider using them at my own studio, where I could
monitor the use and wear, but would dispose of them at the first
sign of tearing or fraying.
