So you have an existing kiln?

My ports for B-4's with pilots are 4 1/2" wide and 5 inches
high. This is a bit small for the flames of the burner and pilot
together, but when I suggested to my "advisors", Mark Ward and
various Clayart officianados that I make the ports taller during
my last kiln rebuild, I was told to leave the ports as is. If
you adjust the burner tips just right, the main burner flame is
unimpeded and the pilot flame just hits the brick below the
port. The brick(hardbrick) stands up to this just fine.....

Jennifer, loading the kiln now that we've got temps in the
30's!! We had weeks below 10 degrees....brrrr

Lajos,
I have built a number of kilns using B-4s with the piggyback Ransome pilots.
A standard burner port one brick wide (4 1/2") and two bricks high (bricks
laying flat - total 5" high) works great, and it is very easy to work into
the brick wall as you build the kiln. This might give a little less than
the 1/2" clearance that Craig suggests in some spots, but there will be
extra clearance in the corners, and it comes out fine. My preference is to
cast the burner ports to exact size, with the 1/2" clearance all the way
around, but I cannot say that those cast ports work any better than the
square ones.
Best wishes -

Hi:

The b-4s need to have ports that are one half inch larger on all four
sides. You have to include the pilot in this, of course. You will have a
rectangular port with the vertical dimension being larger than the
horizontal dimension. You also need to set the burner tip back from the
port at least one inch and you could do a two inch setback with no loss of
efficiency.
