spodumene? (fwd)

Donald Sauch, who knows how to add better than I do, sent me a couple of
corrections to my bit on Spodumene ...see below.
at 2 am my math skills drop off noticeably, and since I tend to
write online onscreen and post immediately, errors do happen. His
mole weight for Li2CO3 is correct (I omitted one Li atom). and I cited
the Spodumene model from memory, assumed that it was like K and Na
feldspar, 1:1:6, whereas it is similar to Nepheline Syenite, 1:1:4.
Donald provides info on a Canadian supplier of Spodumene that
is helpful. He also gives the revised substitution values for Spodumene
Please adjust my post accordingly.
later. Peace. Tom B.

Dear Tom,
Always good to see someone take the initiative to explain things to the
novices. However, it looks like a couple errors crept into your post. The
molecular formula of ideal spodumene is 1 mole Li2O + 1 mole Al2O3 + 4(not
6) moles of silica. The molecular weights you cite for Li2O and Li2O-CO3
are incorrect.
Li has an at. wt. of 6.9 and oxygen 16 therefore Li2O has a mol. wt. of
about 29.8g/mole. Carbon's at. wt. is 12 therefore the mol. wt. of CO2 is
about 44g/mole. Lithium carbonate then has a mol. wt. of about 73.8g/mole.
Hence:

SPODUMENE....100.0% is equivalent to

LITHIUM CARBONATE... 15.5% by weight
EPK KAOLIN.......... 57.3%
SILICA.............. 27.2%
100.0%

This of course ignores the LOI and Na/K/Ca/Mg/ etc. in real spodumene,
but for highly processed brands, like TANCO from Canada, it is close. I
don't have any connection with TANCO, financial or otherwise, but have used
their spodumene for glazes and had excellent results.
I posted to you directly, as you may wish to be the one to post a
corrected version of your original to the list.

Best regards, Don (a lurker)
