Dear Friends

According to an email I just received the Joint
Legislative Budget Committee recommended:

(1) zero funding for the Arizona Commission on the Arts

(2) eliminating all staff positions starting July 1, 2003 and

(3) removing $7million from the state arts endowment

This is not a done deal, but it is absolutely not a time to remain silent.
These cuts are not about the Arizona Commission on the Arts and their staff=
.
These cuts are about arts funding for all of Arizona. Such cuts will affec=
t
anyone who benefits from the myriad of arts programs =AD those that enhance
classroom curriculum, those that benefit social service organizations, thos=
e
that serve the elderly, the disabled, the academically challenged, and yes,
those that improve the quality of life for all of us in Arizona.

The arts are not only a quality of life issue for arts patrons but for all
Arizonans. The arts provide far greater economic stimulus to the Valley
than the dollars at risk in these recommended cuts. Yet, with a new
congress and new committees, they may be at the greatest risk in recent
memory. I urge everyone of you to send a letter or an email to your
individual congressional leader. You may share any of the information
above, or simply say:

=B3I live in your district. I consider state arts funding essential to the
quality and economic viability of Arizona. I support the recommendations
from the Governor=B9s office that arts funding remain flat, but do not suppor=
t
any further reductions.=B2
