We have been using Ceramic Supply of NY NJ for a few years, and I have
gotten some MSDS's from them, and they are often not helpful as far as
knowing anything about the material from that particular vendor. They don't
keep the MSDS up with the current vendor, sometimes the MSDS is for a
product from Canada and the bag we purchase is from Australia, or whatever.
Sometimes they are copies of poor copies of poor copies, and you can hardly
read them. I have found that they don't really like questions about their
vendors -- maybe it's just me! I do have the impression that Ceramic Supply
is heavily oriented towards public schools, which may not be very particular
about specifications of materials. Probably the school just needs to have a
piece of paper marked MSDS to satisfy regulations.

I know my last batch of copper was bright green and felt "fluffier" than the
batch I just purchased which is a darker olive greygreen and seems denser.
So far haven't noticed unexpected changes, but I haven't used a lot yet.

Hi Holly,

There are not a lot of suppliers that take this that seriously - but it is
the law. Certainly the MSDS must be for the material they have sold you.

I think the best way to handle this is to explain why you need the
information and you at least need to know where they bought the material -
so you can track down the analysis.

Perhaps a careful explanation about - what is good for the potter is good
for them in the long run.

Perhaps they will eventually see the wisdom of it all - especially when
they see the problem explained on ClayArt.

And - as I said it is the law - I'm sure they don't want a visit from the
safety police.

Many times - if you are persistant - they will give you what you need just
to get you out of their hair.
