I was checking out the net and found a thread
regarding Ron ROys #3 black glaze...that appeared on
the brown side of black. I have been looking for a
black or very deep mahogony turning to a brown? I
don't know if Any one can help me...but I would be
willing to try RR #3 black if it can be shared.
I tried to go to the page on the article, but it is no
longer available...that is why I am inquiring here.
Thank you....any help would be appreciated.Marie

Marie,
It is probably in the archives (probably several times!) but here it is to
save you time:
RR Black #3:
Custer feldspar 22
Whiting 4
Talc 5
Frit 3134 26
EPK 17
Flint 26

Red iron oxide 9
Cobalt carbonate 2
Bentonite 2

If you are not familiar with the archives, you would probably enjoy all the
information there, either from the link at the bottom of every Clayart
message, or at the "By Subject" site at
http://www.potters.org/categories.htm

For us it is quite black, and even blacker over Berry Rust, which works
nicely with wax resist work on the Berry Rust. It runs over the wax resist
lines and the iron red gets all swirly.

Hi Marie,

The original with only 1% cobalt Carb. was not black enough for some people
so the Cobalt was doubled.

Try a test with 0.5 % - maybe that will suit you - even better do one test
with only 1/4 Cobalt carb and another with 3/4 - put those on a test tile
and then mix them together to get 1/5 %. That way you will see wahat
happens as you add more Cobalt.

Ron Roy's Black 3 or 2 over Brown will give interesting results. I have also
seen it over Randy's Red: also interesting. Yoou can get Ron's recipes from
different sources. Her it is from Clayart's Discussion by Subject
Gérard Carrière in Noëlville Ontario Good Luck.

I tried a different version of Ron's Black some time ago and got a
disappointing dark brown. A nicely melted and surfaced dark brown, but not
what I was looking for. John H. notes in his commentary of this glaze

www.frogpondpottery.com ) that the increase of cobalt worked well, and I
agree with him.

I got a gorgeous shiny black, black, black. Thanks, Ron and John!
