itc coating flaking

Clay buds,

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine in Mpls. who coated his new
elements with ITC as per the directions. The ITC has been flaking off as he
did a test firing with no pots. He did another and still more flaking. He
is unhappy to say the least as this kiln is unavailable with two ACC shows
coming up. Any suggestions from the ITC'ers would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Is the ITC coming off as little black specks? If so, this seems to be
normal. I've had this happen in 3 different kilns which I replaced
the elements with ones that I coated with the ITC for metal (#269 I
think). I believe I had gotten too heavy a coat on them. Anyway, the
flaking occurred in the cooling phase, below the melting point of the
glaze. I know this because on opening a glaze firing I found the
black specks all over the edges of the shelves, with nothing stuck in
the glazes.

I think this was discussed a few years back. The metal coating ITC will
flake for the first couple of firings. Just do some bisques to get it
off. I have it on one of my kilns that I replaced elements. It seems
fine now. May have been about 10-15 firings ago. All is OK.

Tony,

I asked Feriz about this since it happened to my elements. I used itc 100.
He told me that it was all right - the protective coating was established
after the first firing and was very, very, thin. He must have been right
because despite all of the visible coating being off in time, I still had no
degredation to my elements after over 100 firings.

Tell your friend to call ITC and ask them about it. I did (and that's LONG
distance from the Middle East) when my elements threw off brown flakes after
being coated. As I recall, the flakes are no problem.

Grumpily I ask myself why people who live in the country where they bought
the kiln/wheel/glaze/etc don't just call the supplier. It's cheap and
rarely more than three hours of time zone change. And for the record, ITC
is one of the few North American companies that has ever returned a call to
me in Dubai. End of rant.
